Re: VMs: RE: Copyrighting VMS

Hi everyone,

To decode it, we need a decent copy. No decent copy exists. To create a
decent copy, we need to obtain the rights to create such a copy, and the
means to do so. To obtain the means, we may need to raise money, and to
raise some money, we may need to ensure other people cannot parasitically
profit from our fundraising. Copyright is central to all of this.

I think I should point out that the no-ip scans are likely to be good enough for most purposes.

I have a particular (iconographic / art history) interest in the fine details on the "9 rosette" page, and the currently available scans of the page aren't really sufficient to allow me to see them (which is why I bought a copy of Kraus' "Catalogue 100"): well, that's my excuse, anyway. :-)

However, there may be some other good quality photographs of the VMS floating around which we might be able to use.

For example, early VMS researchers using rotoscopes to draw from projected (negative) rotographs, yet the British Library only has a (positive, ie printed) copy of the rotographs in its collection.

Does anyone know whatever happened to those original negative rotographs?

Similarly, when H.P.Kraus printed his "Catalogue 100" (in 1962, I believe - he donated the VMS to the Beinecke in 1969), the photographs of the VMS reproduced therein were different from other ones I've seen (for example, the page is held in position differently, etc). Presumably, those original photographs may still exist, somewhere in Hans Peter Kraus' estate (I presume he is no longer alive?)

Does anyone know what happened to Kraus' estate? My best guess (that, like many New York antiquarians) it would have been donated to the archives of the Grolier Club) appears to be wrong. :-(

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
