I'm using the japanese scans for the final page, and also Jorge Solfi's reproduction (which unfortunately omits the line on the very top.


So, the four lines told me:



1. line vorlober (vorleser, vox-lober ?)

(I cant hold back myself here, this is the precise spelling of something like "hymn" or "mantra" in finnish and a bunch of other finno-ugric languages), these are probably just verses


vorsete??
(vorsagen??? whatever???)


Funny, I'd read the first line completely different:


"p..hebet remen yutzift."

If I really _wanted_ to make sense of that stuff, I'd read it:

"prohebet nomen putzifer"

to say

"Forbids the name of putzifer"

I guess "lutzifer" could be the old german spelling for "lucifer", and the "p" could have been inserted to _avoid_ using the real name of Satan.

I'd give that a jump width of 5 on my open leap-of-faith scale.

What source did you use, Mart? I find it difficult to interpret the same way you did, and if you had a different source, that might shed some light on the objectivity of our results.

Of course, that doesn't parse if we assume that it to be Latin, so perhaps

"aichicon asridabas"?

multas + te + taer tere (or  cere) + portas + m (n?) + ???
(could they be the names of  "many" glyphs of vms alphabet?
do some of them "hold" the others?)


I'm fine with the "multas", but "te"? My japanese scan shows only one blob, but Jorge seemingly put a few strokes where I don't have any in my copy.


I've got something very faint to the left of the visible blob - "in"?

The next word... dunno, but I would read the following "cere"

fix + ... (I give up - could these be terms of vms grammar too?
I cant integrate very well in this logic "Maria" with cross etc right in the night) +



Perhaps "matria", something with "mater"? Yeah, it would be an odd outstanding "t", but "ma(cross)ria" would be just the same...


I give up. Need better repros, otherwise it's reading the clouds...

Interesting to note though that the last glyph in the first group of the last-but-one line "ix" reads like a latin "x", the same for the last glyph in the next word, but the last glyps in the third word appears to a a Voynichese "x" (which looks like the "o" rune of the futhark).

(so take - seems to be imperativ "Also pronounce!")

(native Germans, please tell, was für ein "O" ist das?)

Let a native German tell you, das wäre leichter, if only we knew exactly from when the manuscript dates. Both German script and language went through some considerable changed in the 15th century :-(


But a wild guess for the end of the last line: If I half-close my eyes, what you read as "valsch... gas mich", I would read as

"renoch ubren so nim gas mich O"

There are a few german words ending in "-noch", all meaning "still", "ubren" could be linked to "übrig" ("left over"), and if we read "gar" rather than "gas", we get:

"...darnoch übrig so nim gar mich O"

or

"...still left, so take me O"

or in other words, "if (something) is still left then, so take me: 'O'"

ie, if something hasn't been completed until then, use the weird "O" (as a filler?).

Okay, this is getting very esoteric. Probably it all means "All work and no joy makes Rudolph a dull boy."

Besides, who'd be daft enough to write the key into the encrypted document?
