I completely agree. A hoax would not be just an overkill, but also just too much 
almost for everybody between the time mentioned and us.

In my opinion, the only chance (would not take risks to say, how big) for hoax 
is a collective work, about 100 years old (done par example by a ring of 
falcifiers - to show "look how good we are")
