Subject: VMs: The key
I have always said that EVA is the key to this. By getting your hands dirty
in EVA and seeing where the anomalys are you can find the way to go. Rene,
Gabriele, Jaqcues and others have all gotten their hands dirty. They know
much more than a lot on the list.
Here is a pointer.
tsheoarom
pcheoldom
Take these two words. Remove the t & p gallows and study them. They are the
key to the whole thing. Not by and of themselves, but what they tell you
about the script. That is all I will say. If you work out why these words
are the way they are then you will know what I know.
>hmmmm, but does one really want to know what you 'know'?
Speak with assertion and you might convince people you actually have
a point to make. FYI, the page and/or para initial gallows have been long
identified as being attached to what is often a perfectly 'normal' vms word
without it. Recently somebody mentioned in passing another longstanding
observation that if in fact you were to remove the first character from all
line initial words you'll have 'normal' vms words --- one exception is that
suddenly 'ain' and family become more evident.
EVA is an excellent communication tool to discuss the VMS character set,
no more - no less. It is not the 'key'. Oops, I'm speaking with assertion -
almost
as if that was a proven fact... Okay, it might be a 'key', but one amazingly
convenient one if it is.
Rene, Gabriel, Jacques and 'others' know more about the VMS then a lot
on the list because they've been at it for an incredible amount of time and
yes - they have played around in the weeds - along with Stolfi and Takeshi
and
numerous 'others' and it has little to do with whether they used EVA when
they
were playing and more to do with the fact that they were delving into lots
of
what-ifs...
It's great to be passionate about your angle of attack, I know if you
looked back through the list you'll find some interesting 'now stupid
assumptions'
made by some of the list members who have been around a long time... We all
take
guesses and stabs and throw in some what-ifs -- and once in a while one or
two
of us might stick our head out and say - wow look what I found (only to find
out
that it's already been noted and soundly beaten to a pulp or worse - it is
blatantly
a mis-read).
I know I've tossed out a number of wild thoughts over the years (some of
which I
still hang onto in my what-if closet), but the inclusion of EVA in the list
was a boon
to communication - and really, I can't see it as anything more than that. I
know GC hated
EVA with a passion because he figured that people might think the EVA
characters were
the VMS perfectly transliterated -- and a few people from time to time have
fallen into that
trap, Jeff.
John.
