If this is from Takeshi Takehashi's set of scans of the microfilm, I'm
quite sure these rectangles are areas where he wanted to enhance the text
(presumably to transcribe it more reliably). No great mystery, I'm sure. :-)
Some of them are also in the colour images; it is possible they are thin
films of some material glued on the surface to make it more solid (once
upon a time a very thin kind of paper was used for this, but other
materials might be used today). This is routinely done in painting
restoration. Just an assumption, though...
