VMs: Folio and Quire numbers

Hello,

Looking at quire and folio numbers at the margins of some
folios, we can see that folio numbers are written with
modern Arabic numerals, while quire numbers use archaic
forms for some digits:

"4" is written as a lower case cursive "l"
"5" is written as "4" (approximately)
"7" is written as "^"

The transition from these forms to the current ones may not
have happened at once in Europe, but analysis of this
subject may provide some clues about time and origin. Have
anyone researched this ?
