VMs: Newtons code ?

I'm reading Niccolo Guicciardini's short treatise on Newton and in the
chapter on Newton and alchemy (around 1668) he says:

"Newton built a laboratory in his room and performed experiments on the
transmutation of metals, and he noted the outcome in page upon page of
code."

Anyone know what kind of code? My guess is that it would be the common
symbolic gibberish of the alchemists (black sun etc.). But still it could
refer to our kind of "code".
