Dogs - interesting example - we'd probably recognize (most of) them as
dogs.
But do they have different numbers of ears, or tails in the wrong
place, cf 500 years back?

Implausible based on what evidence? Look at all the breeds of dog that
have "evolved" in much the same time-frame... :-o
