There was no discussion - only my citing split gallows as an example of
being forced into modifying character definitions.
Even tho I've been onlist since late '96 and searched the archives I
still feel at a disadvantage cuz until Takahashi and Beinicke posted
their FREE pix I couldn't afford to do any serious research. Until then
each clear picture (only a handful) I considered gold. Even with the
recent pix I haven't even had the chance to discover that split gallows
are actually that rare! But rare can't mean insignificant. I propose the
opposite.
I've considered decorative flourish but I do not believe that "it does
not matter" or "does not cause any misreading at all". If just for show
then what you must deduce is that the right half of gallows is
superfluous. I would then expect the right half to come down between
words, not in the middle of a word, but then some drawings split text
too.
If not for show then how is split gallows "read"? Why are there no stand
alone right half gallows? Is it like a roman numeral M? Originally a
Greek Phi, a circle with a vertical line, standing for 1000. Later it
got cursive like a rounded M and then got split in half to C and D (100
& 500). I think this is in the archives too. Is it like a reversed "qu"?
We hardly ever see Q without U.
