I guess I'd be a ~little~ more convinced if there wasn't half a millennium 
between the Italian and Latin texts you had to hand. :-)

I stand by my assertion that Italian and Latin are ~reasonably~ close, 
perhaps even close enough for the same basic writing/encoding system to be 
used (with only a few changes) - though I completely accept your point that 
the many differences between the two (especially in connecting words) need 
to be taken into account.

Even so, if it's a codebook at all, then surely it could have a Latin and 
Italian column next to each index, one (roughly) translating the other? 
Just a thought! :-)
