A possible explanation is that the mark was used to distinguish the 
letter below from a similar letter. A dash over "u" was used at one 
time to distinguish it from "m" or "n". Some writers did not use the 
straight line but made comma-like marks. 

Incidentally, I started comparing the words of the outer circle of 
one goat page to the other. Why should they be different? What 
characteristic is it that changes/mutates from one to the other with -
-- what? Time? Horoscope? Or did different scribes just have 
instructions to fill the space from a selection of words? I have not 
determined whether the two drawings are on the same piece of 
material. If not, they may belong to separate books ???
