RE: VMs: What do you think about Eight?

Hi all,

I have searched the web a little for celtic astrology the last days. The reason being that I was somehow attracted by the idea that if there were some significant cultural knowledge to be concealed and preserved, it might well be that of the celtic druids. Mind you that this was and is just an idea which might or might not be supported by facts (if we can speak of such anyway). I will not attempt to pursue this further, as I'm not a scholar and I'm most likely lacking the means of doing so.

In any case, I found this interesting site:

http://cura.free.fr/cura-en.html

It's a collection of articles on the matter of astrological research build mainly around the thesis of Patrice Guinard, Ph.D. Although a french site, there is plenty of material in english. Hopefully this is useful or intersting.

On the matter of eight, and the reference to zodiacal systems, you might find

http://cura.free.fr/docum/02fagan.html

an interesting read.

I remember there was a search for the origin of the sagittarius zodiac sign in the form it is used in the VMs. I can't however recall the outcome if there was any. Here's a bit that adds up to it:

"When the Greco-Latin ideas took firmer hold on the Irish perceptions, we note a change in the vocabulary. Native ideas of planets and zodiacal signs began to be dropped in favour of the Greco-Latin concepts and these were, at first, simply translated into Irish. For example:

Aries became An Rea or Reithe, a translation of ram (aries = Latin for ram and so on); thus the constellation of Cancer was known as An Portán, the crab. There being no concept of lion in Old Irish the word used for Leo here was Cú - a large hound; while Virgo was Oighbhean, a young girl; Capricorn became Pocán, the goat; Sagittarius was An Saighead, an archer or soldier, and so on. "

Hi, John

You are correct that the different plants might have had optimum times of activation, depending upon which planet ruled the plant and the activity in question.
The planetary hours, or uneven hours, do tend to show us those distinctions; they don't consist of 60 minutes per hour, but divisions of daylight hours by twelve equal parts and divisions of night time hours by twelve equal parts. Each hour is assigned a different planetary ruler in sequence.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the part of the VMs that shows light and dark divisions of the signs. If you could provide a link, I would be grateful.

I asked what the four divided by two might signify.
Sorry, I meant signify as in meaning, not mathematical significance but lexical significance. Smile.

The four elements have significance, importance, meaning, which can be verbalized. The twelve signs have meaning. The twelve houses of the chart have meaning. What would the eight (whatevers?) mean?

We astrologers tend to get into that sort of thing.

Thanks for thinking along with me!

Warmly,

Pam
