An early idea I dismissed was that VMs words were produced with 
"runestones" which were blank on one side and had a char on the other
and were cast randomly.  I don't think the figures work out for this, 
but I could imagine someone believing such a process was guided by 
spirits in a fortune-telling type way, but if the rectangular window 
theory holds up I'm not sure I can credit someone doing that and 
thinking it was actually recording meaning passed down from "another 
world".   Only my opinion though. :-)
