VMs: Something for the list to check out.

Hello to the list.

Well, the time has come for me to step up to the podium, so to speak, and
stick my neck out for some "peer review" (read here: bloodletting).
I've been putting this paper together since July (or so my notes tell me)
and I've finally gotten it rewritten enough that I think it can be
followed by someone other than myself.
That said, everyone sharpen up those axes and take a look at the paper
