A good book on the Flat Earth misunderstanding is  Inventing the Flat Earth 
by  Russell, J. B., (Praeger Publishers, Westpark, Connecticut, 1991) 
Perhaps reading it might help clear up some of our misunderstandings. 
Russell has spent considerable time and energy looking at this myth, and 
discovering it's roots and why we believe it existed today when there is no 
evidence to that it was widely accepted or even known about. The reason why 
this relates to the VMS is that it influences how we view scientific 
knowledge in the Middle Ages, which is reflected in star charts etc. (If you 
accept a Middle Ages date for the VMS).  :)
