I agree completely, and would defer to Jim's (and/or Rene's)
judgment about the best way to handle this recent problem.
I don't know how long this list has been going, but I think
I've been reading it for at least 10 years, and I have never
seen such a flurry of off-topic posts as have shown up in
the last 4 months or so. It seems to be getting worse, and
I think the time to act is now. What that action might be,
of course, is up to the people who have to do the work and
who understand the mechanics of list management. (I am not
one of those.)
In another part of my world, some of my non-VM friends think
I am obsessed about trains and railroads. It would not be
hard for me to postulate that certain repetitive strings in
the VM represent the choo-choo-choo noise of a steam
locomotive, and that some other repetitive chain is the
clickety-clack of the wheels on the track, and that the
whole document was written in the late 1800s by someone who
was convinced that railroads were the salvation/ruination of
the western world, and that this was all predicted thousands
of years ago by various ancient authorities using the divine
wisdom imparted by the heavens. I'm sure I could find
logical or illogical arguments to counter those who believed
I was not correct. I could probably fill a few hard disks
with email explanations of the steel making process that was
used in the late 1800s as railroad management tried to find
the best rail for various climates and conditions. Part of
that experimentation had to do with the quality of coke used
in the process, and I could write extensive emails on the
variations of coke available between 1860 and 1890.
That seems the way many recent threads are going.
If it is not obvious how a post might further our
understanding of the VM, then I believe the poster (or
someone) should furnish either a warning of unrelated
material ahead, or a brief, one-paragraph explanation of how
this seemingly off-topic post does in fact have a potential
to help us understand the VM.
Best regards to all.
