I do not remember the date, but this may be relatively recent.

I was more concerned/puzzled  about the "apparently" because I thought it was 
based on some indication that this was the case. 

Perhaps "could have been used..." is more appropriate as I cannot see any 
indication that anybody used Cardan grilles in that particular way or for 
that purpose. (Please correct me if I am wrong).

Speculation of a speculation at best.
