Re: VMs: Re: Traditional Astrology and the Flat Earth
Hi, Glenn
For those who are not avid about astrological posts,
this one contains a description of the historical
setting of the few facts we know of the death of
Giordano Bruno. In general, we are attempting to find
common ground or discuss differing points of view
about whether the Church and astrologers were seen as
one and the same authority by the "people" of the VMs
era.
What we believe about extant attitudes toward
astrology contributes to the formation of our concept
of the provenance of the VMs and the possible
intention of the VMs author.

The records of Bruno's inquisition trial no longer
exist, from what I understand. So we are not able to
state clearly for which of his unorthodox beliefs he
suffered.
As for his writing, he was not widely known as
contributing anything new to the understanding of
astronomy or mathematics; although he did concurr with
Copernicus on the position of the Earth relative to
the Sun, this was not the major thrust of his writing.
He was widely regarded as a memory expert, an
astrologer, a mage, and a florid Neoplatonist, active
in reviving the school of Hermes Trismegistus. The
latter of these areas of expertise led him into
beliefs which were most likely to have branded him as
a heretic.
So, since Bruno practiced hermetic astrology, are we
saying that no one could distinguish him from the
Church? Even though the Church tried him for heresy
and had him burned at the stake?
Saying that Christ did not come in a physical body
could get you burned.
Saying that the earth was round was not an issue
critical to the Catholic faith.
Saying that the Sun was the center of the Solar system
was not officially procliamed an issue of faith by the
Church until 1613.
Bruno died for his beliefs in 1600.
Warmly,
Pam
