As Dana suggested a while back, there may well be
many more hidden
symmetries within the zodiac section: regardless of
how wide individual
bifolios are, there are still many distinct ways of
folding and binding
them (as we saw in Quire 9). More particularly,
who's to say that (what we
now know as) quires 10 and 11 weren't originally
bound together?
What we see now makes sense in terms of the
order of the illustrations. Alternative bindings
imply that the page numbering is wrong, the
quiration is wrong and the order of the zodiac
is messed up.
Saying that there might be an alternative is
not really helping us. A specific alternative
could be assessed, to see how it 'improves'
things (e.g. by putting Aries at the start after all).
After all, there are only so many distinct ways
of folding and binding the quires.
Cheers, Rene
