Re: VMs: Southern Alchemy

Hi Dana,

Great! Did you translate it yourself or found it on the web ( I was unable to ) or...? This is anyway the first English version I happen to see.

As Jan told, there is enough hint to the identification of Lavin Vaclav with Lavinius Venceslas for now. As you possibly saw, the hunt for Pontanus is more intricate, and Baresch looks really to be - at the moment - an "invisible".

Would you happen to learn more about V.L., I'll surely be interested.

Hello Jean,

Thank for your comments and for investigating this further. I offer below a very rough translation of Lavinius's "Tractatus de Caelo Terrestri", enough I think to grasp the concept of what is being conveyed:

Treatise of the Terrestrial Heaven

Wenceslao Lavinius de Moravia

To  nature was first create only one corporeal spirit, that is common and is occult, and that is a precious balsam of life that conserves that which is pure and good, and destroys the impure and maligned.  This spirit is the end and beginning of all creation; triple in sustenance, and that is made from salt, sulfuric and mercurial or pure water. From on high, coagulation, unites and waters all these places below, by means of a dry unctuous and humid. Remains thus disposed to receive whatever form and figure. Only the Art, and with help from the natural, can make it visible to our eyes. Occult in its womb a force and infinite virtue, thus is something that is full of the properties of the Heaven and the Earth. It is hermaphrodite and makes to create all things, mixed with them, because it carries enclosed all the seeds of the entire globe. It is full of a subtle and powerful fire, and upon descending from heaven imprints and imbues the force above the bodies of the land. Its abdomen is porous and is full of ardor.  It is the father of all things. This abdomen therefore fills, with another vaporous fire and receives without ceasing its nourishment of the radical humor that, in this enormous body, is revived from the body of the mineral water, something that is realized by the concoction of its warm fire. This water that can coagulate and that engenders all things, is converted in a pure earth who by means of a strong union, has the virtue of the enclosed heavens within; and because in this same earth remains united with the Heaven. Because of this it has been given the beautiful name of Heaven below (terrestrial). In the same manner that to the beginning, the first naturalization is served by the separation to order the paste (dough) that was in disorder and confusion.

In this manner, the Art that loves the perfection, should imitate nature. The natural removes the substantial excrement, well with the terrestrial limo that is converted in water or will for adustion. The art employs the lotion and the good digestion for the water or for the fire; it separates the trash and the impurities vivifying and washing the soul of all vices.  That which knows the manner to use the water and the fire, knows thus the true path that guides it to the most high secrets of the natural The water, that grand body, that first creature of God. Remained from a beginning full of spirit, possessing all class of forms in the foundation (cement), and by means of the movement the soul and vivifies all. She produces all the things to the light of the heaven and the earth. The water i! s the nutrient of all that which lives in those two places. In the earth is a vapor, in the heaven is primarily fire, triple in its substance and prime matter, because from three proceed and to three go all the things from the natural. It contains a balsam that has for father to the son and the moon by means of the germ air in the places below and looks for the most elevated (high). It nourishes the land in its warm abdomen and is cause of all perfection.

The grand God that gives life to all has placed two remedies for the spirits and for the bodies, or in other words two things that purify and wash them and are the cause why the corruption disperses and leads towards a new life. The metals possess within these two things that are cause of the separation and participate from the earth and the sky. For that reason these two things have lowered the heaven to the earth and fly in tandem to the heaven in order to make appear its strength over the land. In the same manner that the sun dissipates the clouds and illuminates the earth; this spirit thus prepares and separates from its clouds, illuminates all that is dark. In this spirit one has to consider two forms, in its sustenance and in its poison.

Its sustenance is double and conserves all the bodies with a bitter salt. Its poison that is also double consumes and destroys them. These are the faculties enclosed in the Limbo and the Chaos and that has the same effects when it is dried of the earth. But when it is being prepared, separating the good from the bad, it manifests its strength (force) and power over the perfect and the imperfect.

I live in the mountains and in the plain. I am father before being son. I have engendered to my mother and my mother and my father have taken me in their breast and brought me up without desires of things (supplies; objects). I am hermaphrodite and have the two natures (forms). I am the conqueror of the strong and the vindicator of the weak. There is nothing so beautiful below the heaven nor of such perfect form. From me is born an admirable bird and whose bones that are my bones makes a small nest, and flying without wings, resuscitates the dead. The art is above the laws of nature and finally remains transformed in a king who infinitely rebase to other truths.

END

Dear Dana,

Thanks for this ; I would mostly react to you first link, although I am of course interested in other ones ; you surely know for instance that the red red rose you mentionned in the heraldry of the Rozmberk family is the symbol of the achievement of the philosopher?s stone.

At the same time, the white one is representing an intermediate step, namely the thransmutation of one metal into silver ( red is for gold). Perhaps Baresch was part of the vicinity of one of the Rozmberks, who knows ?

Anyway, back to you first link :

http://www.ckrumlov.cz/uk/mesto/histor/t_alchym.htm

Here is the German version, for our German speaking colleagues :

http://www.ckrumlov.cz/de/mesto/histor/t_alchym.htm

Perhaps somebody in the list will be glad to know that there is a Yahoo group devoted to alchemy in Czech lands :

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alchemy_museum_newsletter/

But possibly list already is aware of this group ; I further noticed that in the first quoted link, many exciting names are written ; one of them is Vaclav Lavin ; on this one I tried to dig a little. My feeling at the moment ? but perhaps I am wrong ? is that he could be Lavinius of Moravia.

The latter is a famous alchemist.

IMHO it is worthwile to know that according to Rafal in Adam?s site he could have been connected to Michael Sendivogius :

http://www.alchemywebsite.com/a-archive_dec01.html

He was living in Prague in the 1590?s and his major alchemical treatise was first published 1612 or so, it is the

Tractatus de Caelo terrestri.

Here is a Spanish version :

An Italian one with references and commentaries :

And finally a French one :

The latter is still available in Canseliet?s work :

Thanks to Adam, although, an English version seems to be for sale too :

Probably already known to this discussion group is that Krumlov in southern Bohemia was a center for alchemy during Rudolph's reign.

While certainly not conclusive, I find it somewhat interesting that central Baresch's seal was a rose which was also found in the Rosenberg's Coat of Arms.  Refer to the Athanasius Kircher Correspondence Project at Stanford University (need to download Luna Insight software to view letters; search by name for Barschius under Athanasius Kircher Project...; I had a lot of fun figuring out how Baresch's letter was folded and sealed and how Kircher opened the letter which was subjected both to the use of a sharp letter opener, in addition to human fingers; rather interesting.)
