Re: VMs: Hello to all...

I wonder if anyone is aware of the existence of
a mosque or similar building with nine circular
areas as on the rosettes page, where each
room/area is dedicated to a particular science.

This could be in terms of illustrations/inscriptions,
or in terms of 'dedication'. I have had this nagging
feeling (like deja-vu) for a long time now and cannot
pin it down.

Hey Rene, could that building be the Library in Alexandria or the Museum in Alexandria? Alexandria was the center for learning in the ancient world for many centuries, and was often at the center of ancient maps. If this is the case, then the round "cannon looking things" in the drawing would be the ends of scrolls. Aulus Gellius and Ammianus Marcellinus speak of 700,000 scrolls in the Library.

So this drawing could easily be the layout of the Library. There are nine distinct buildings (could they be stories?). Each building seems to be labelled as to what was located in each section. The center circle would represent the Great Hall at the center of the library. There is more info found on my webpage:

http://nabataea.net/alex.html and also http://nabataea.net/TreasuryMystery.html

There are lots of other similar pages on the web as well. But no one has ever seen a floor plan for the library, and it has not yet been discovered (although it has been rebuilt according to someone's dream). I don't think that they had an actual floor plan to work by.

Anyway, it is an interesting idea. What can this group dig up about the Library in Alexandria? Was there a similar building in existence in Baghdad during the years 800 - 1200 AD? Just a thought.

Dan
