If you don't want to wait too long, in a nutshell:
Michael distinguishes two categories of VM glyphs, the "e" and "i" class,
resp., based on the shape of the "primary" or core stroke of the glyph. In
addition, there are a few control characters.
This allows him to set up seven comparatively simple rules which describe the
composition of "legal" VM words (words found in the VM), like "'e' character is
followed by 'e', or control character 'a'" (for example). (You may consider it
a variant of the mantle-core-crust paradigm.)
Michael then hypothesizes that the VM may actually not be a written text, but
some kind of odd musical notation, which would explain the repetition and
slight variation of phrases.
One note I personally found very interesting is that Michael encountered a
number of instances where the VM seemed to break his simple rules. Upon
inspection he found that those spots coincided with points where the
transcription of the VM was questionable. So, might part of our problems be
that we all have put too much faith in the transcriptions available...?
Cheers,
Elmar
P.S.: Michael -- very nice article, concise and clean!
