Could it be from something like [Fulgan]itz?  I've seen -itz mutate into
-tiz in English-speaking hands before, though normally as a misspelling.
I think -itz (or -ic, in Polish)  would be a fairly normal sort of ending
for a name, e.g., Kurilowic, which I think must be from Kuril "cyril" + ow
'gen. plur.' + ic.

Fulgan or maybe Vulgan seems to occur as a name.  I think it might be from
fulgentius, also a name, and another possible explanation of the -tiz,
though it strikes me that something irregular has happened anyway, in that
case.
