I second your guess "on." = "oncia" (ounce).

Especially as apothecaries used both ounces and fluid ounces. :-)


I can't figure out "achi"; could it be a typo?

Possibly, but the text as transcribed in Pasolini is definitely "achi", and the Cuppano copy is notable for its neat, precise hand (I'm told).


I'm currently trying to trace a number of fairly old papers and articles about the "Gli Experimenti" which may help us understand language-specific details (like "achi").
