It was quite normal in the nineteenth century to use chemicals to
enhance faded writing in manuscripts, and unfortunately the result
is often that the writing fades again and is opaque to modern
techniques.

By the way, the scan of f 17r on no-ip, taken from the old microfilm,
shows detail of what used to be called the Matteoli inscription
which cannot be seen on the more recent colour Beinecke scan. The
first word looks to me like mulher or meilhor - connected with the
Romance language names of the months?

...or that Voynich forged the signature himself, then realised that he had to remove it so as to prevent people checking his modern ink? :-)

It's the fact that a signature (presumably denoting ownership) had been removed *without another being put in its place* that confuses me. Is that normal behaviour for MS owners of this period?
