I know that standard scripts exist that may
be very helpful (although I never got them to
work :-/ ).

Essentially, if the mail archive is converted to
a set of web pages, which have a common root
somewhere, the user should be able to enter
his own search key word and find all pages that
include it. I think that it is impossible to
come up with good keywords beforehand.

About 10 or so years ago I first started on 
my own VMs web pages and thought about putting
all the mailing list material in, sorted by
some useful index. I started along the lines
of D'Imperio's table of contents but soon found
that it was not feasible.

For me (but I'm only one prospective user out 
of many hundreds) it would be sufficient if
'threads' are linked in the usual manner,
and there is a search mechanism as described above.
