Dear Nick,
Nothing so sophisticated, I'm afraid - more like a description of the VMS as
Necker cube, where there are two or more ways of construing the same item, each of
which is internally consistent, consistent with the data we have, and inconsistent
with each of the others. The possible categories may be fuzzy, as you indicate (for
instance, a coded message consisting of "fooled you all!" followed by 240 pages of
nursery rhymes could be construed as a code or as a hoax), but that doesn't mean
that all explanations are true to some degree - the nursery rhymes code, for
instance, would exclude the model of "hoax containing only meaningless gibberish".
For what it's worth, I found Personal Construct Theory a lot more useful than
semiotics, and there's some interesting work going on there with fuzzy logic and
rough set theory these days, if you're keen on categorisation....
Best wishes,
Gordon
