Re: VMs: Another VMS idea?

That's what made it seem compelling to me.

   T H I S I S A T E S T
FRO GS AR E FRO GS ARE FR OGS AR EF ROG SA RE FR OGS ARE

FROTGS HARIE FROS GSIARES FRAOGS TAR EREROG SASRE FRTOGS ARE

you get instances of similar words: "FROTGS, FRAOGS, FRTOGS" that are one character different. Very Voy like in that regard. Of course that may be due to my particular example....

I was originally trying to determine how you could have a cipher that is not a simple substitution cipher but still retain a normal-esque character frequency graph. Now if I can find some sort of pattern that others have missed......

Hello Larry,

It is interesting that your example gives a peculiar and difficult to
describe repetition similar to that of the VMS. The possibility of
there being two intermingled languages has been mentioned somewhere
but the rationale for the statement was not given. Various sorting of
letters on different lines might give a clue to your encryption and
determine the method of substitution if the method is not too
variable. It would be tedious unless there is a shortcut. Aside from
professional recognition of types of ciphers, how much historical
codebreaking involved clues not in the cipher itself?

Ciao .......... Knox
