My guess is that, generally in line with what Pamela Richards describes, it's very old - and quite possibly Etruscan. I also find it interesting that we've also discussed whether the crowned Leo zodiac nymph might signify Regulus. :-)

FWIW, the worst thing about the whole Strega/Wicca thing is - as should be fairly obvious already - there's not only a paucity of original sources (apart from witchcraft trial transcripts, which may be somewhat atypical), but also an entire modern layer of neopagan myth-making on top, trying to reconstruct deep world-religions from the multiple streams of pagan thought. Unfortunately for us, this whole neopagan "research programme" has the effect of making it hard to determine what is (and what is not) "real history". *sigh*
