I have seen quite a number of last wills of burghers from
the 16th/17th c. (Poland and Bohemia) which contained inventories
of their movables, including books. They were always kept
with other precious items in locked coffers.
But once the VMS reached Rome, it may have been different.
Actually, it would be interesting to know when the "common
bookshelf" was actually invented.
